About Me

Pessimism of the intellect, optimism of the will


Over the past 200 years, humans have developed an immense industrial global economy, providing unprecedented prosperity. However, our economy has massively overshot the carrying capacity of the earth. The words by Antonio Gramsci "pessimism of the intellect, optimism of the will" couldn't fit better. The current situation may seem dire, but I still believe there is hope if we fully embrace the circular economy.

It was for these reasons that in 2017 I decided to alter my career path and start a PhD. Now, I'm in my fourth year of the PhD in information systems and circular economy and work as a research scientist for SINTEF. I research how companies can leverage data and insights from digital technologies (i.e., IoT, Big Data, and AI) to enable more sustainable and circular business models. I'm particularly committed to conveying the enormous synergistic opportunities in digitalizing the circular economy.

I'm currently engaged in many activities on the side of my PhD, such as developing the new global ISO standard for Circular Economy and can be seen in various arenas from EU policy development to digitalization conferences.

CIRCit Work Package Leader

Work package leader and responsible for the delivery of "WP04 - Smart Circular Economy". The CIRCit research project develops open source, science-based tools and approaches with the aim of supporting the Nordic industry in its transition to a circular economy.

I focus on building the new Smart Circular Economy.

My expertise lies in connecting the separate fields of Digital Technologies and Information Systems with Circular Economy and Sustainability principles. I've detailed a new research stream and knowledge base for this called Smart Circular Economy, evident through several publications and project engagements.

The concept of the Smart Circular Economy, or Digital Circular Economy, can be thought of as the green digital transformation for increased adoption or optimization of circular economy principles. Hence, digital technologies form the operational building blocks of a more efficient and effective circular economy.

This requires correctly leveraging technologies such as IoT, Big Data, AI, and Blockchain in a joint digital and sustainable transformation. In other words, the Smart Circular Economy increase the systemic resource efficiency and productivity through supporting human decision-makers. If done correctly, a company applying such smart circular strategies can increase both their sustainability impact and competitive performance.
